Starting an Independent Fashion Brand at 50!

Starting a sustainable fashion brand at 50

If anyone told me in my twenties that I would be starting a business at the age of 50, I would have called them crazy. But here I am, with a full heart and extremely grateful to all who have supported me during this journey.

As a petite woman, at 4’ 11”, I’ve been designing and making my own clothes for as long as I can remember. I know from personal experience how frustrating it can be to see all the amazing clothes in the stores and after trying them on you just walk out empty handed. Most of the pieces I tried on would never fit quite right, the sleeves were too long, bust darts hit the wrong spot, hems were too long--the list goes on.

After raising two amazing kids, I decided to go back to college (at the age of 44) to pursue a degree in Business Administration & Entrepreneurship. I attended school part-time, worked full-time, and had my fair share of late nights at the kitchen table studying for exams and meeting project deadlines. But I have to say that although it took me four years to finish a two year degree, I have no regrets.

While writing essays for several classes I picked topics that I was genuinely interested in. This is how I learned about organic cotton farms, the impact of synthetic fabrics on the environment, how some amazing fashion brands (like PreLoved) are minimizing landfill waste by using upcycled materials in their designs and so much more.

Today I am using all of the things I learned about business combined with everything I’m passionate about to launch Sonera Design. The purpose of this business is to build a brand that caters exclusively to petite women while making every effort to protect our environment in the process!
